Probabilmente pochi conoscono la tragedia che avvenne nei boschi sopra Curio..
Charles R. Callaway era partito da una base della Corsica verso mezzogiorno di quel mercoledì di marzo sul bombardiere pilotato dal comandante canadese Everhart e altri quattro membri d'equipaggio. Scopo della missione era quello di colpire ponti e strutture ferroviarie nella zona di Bolzano per impedire i rifornimenti ai tedeschi. Terminato l'attacco la contraerea centrò il motore destro del B25 che iniziò a perdere quota. Il pilota decise quindi di dirigersi verso la Svizzera per cercare un atterraggio di fortuna, ad un certo punto tutto l'equipaggio si lanciò con il paracadute. Tutti i membri sopravvissero, a parte due, il comandante Everhart che fu ucciso sopra Lavena Ponte Tresa e appunto Callaway a cui non si aprì il paracadute.

Alle bis auf zwei überlebten: Kommandant Everhart, der über Lavena Ponte Tresa getötet wurde, und Callaway, dessen Fallschirm sich nicht öffnete.

Charles R. Callaway had departed from a base in Corsica around noon that Wednesday in March on the bomber piloted by Canadian commander Everhart and four other crew members. The purpose of the mission was to strike bridges and railroad structures in the Bolzano area to prevent supplies to the Germans.
