Geocache Description:

Standard blue top peanut butter jar

Cache is set at the location of the shaft of the Osceola Mine #4 shaft.  It's an old style cap made from dumping junk (often old cars) until they got jammed and plugged the shaft.   The water pouring out of the shaft is the re-emergence of Hammill Creek.  The creek leaves the Swedetown ponds to the northwest, crosses Woodland Road, and somewhere in the swampy area south of the road, disappears into the mines.  The original route of the creek can be seen in arial views, but the creek now comes out of the mine here.

Easiest approach is off the DNR ATV trail to the north.

An old picture of the mine works is included in the images.  Taken from the west, it shows the #4 on the right, the #3 on the left, and the boiler house (for both mines) in the center.  Remains of the boiler house and smoke stack base can be found just north of the ATV trail.
