BROADGATE VENUS
FERNANDO BOTERO (BORN 1932, COLOMBIA)
PATINATED BRONZE, 1989
EXCHANGE SQUARE
In 1944, aged 12, Fernando Botero was enrolled in matador school. His uncle noted that the boy was more interested in drawing bulls than fighting them – two years later his first illustrations were published in a Medellín newspaper. The oversized power of those first bulls can still be seen in his signature style of “boterismo” which depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume often to flag up humour or political criticism depending on the piece.
Specially commissioned for Broadgate and, at five tonnes, Broadgate Venus is one of Botero's most voluptuous pieces and her generous curves have made her a long-standing favourite across the neighbourhood.
She’s all-encompassing love personified.
