Geocache Description:

This cache is placed near the foot of the ruins of Castel D'Appio, a 12th century castle and over looking the bay of Latte on the french/italian border.

Castel d'Appio was built in 1140 by the Republic of Genoa shortly after the first occupation of Ventimiglia.

In 1318 the sudden attack of Robert of Anjou against the Ghibellines of the intemelia city forced the latter to barricade themselves inside the castle, yielding shortly after to the victorious advance of the Guelphs. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Castel d'Appio was abandoned in favor of the underlying Castelvecchio, the latter purchased by the Genoese republic in 1562. Castelvecchio, today's Fort San Paolo, was chosen over the original castle as it is located in a more convenient, close to the city of Ventimiglia.

Castel d'Appio rediscovered a role during the war of the Austrian succession in 1746-1747 between the Austro-Sardinian army and the Franco-Genoese soldiers. In 1746 the French, already committed downstream in the defense of Fort San Paolo, decided to send 4,500 soldiers to Castel d'Appio to protect the fort on the side of the mountain. The pressure of the soldiers from beyond the Alps was in vain because General Balbiano, commander of the Austro-Sardinian troops, was able to immediately seize the stronghold. The castle in the following years will have less and less importance, so much so that it was almost completely dismantled shortly after.
