Geocache Description:

This cache is located at Middleton Arena.

The arena is a venue in Middleton with a sports centre and auditorium for local gigs.

It's located on Lance Corporal Joel Halliwell VC way.  Corporal Joel Halliwell VC was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was born in Middleton in 1881. He served in the 11th battalion of the Lancashire fusiliers in World War 1.  His brother Tom was killed in 1916.  On 27th May 1918 he was in the fourth Battle of Asine when he performed acts which were awarded a Victoria Cross.  For most conspicuous bravery and determination displayed during the withdrawal of the remnants of the Battalion when closely engaged with the enemy. L/Cpl Halliwell, having captured a stray enemy horse, rode out under heavy rifle fire and machine gun fire and rescued a wounded man from "No Man's Land". He repeated this performance several times, and succeeded in rescuing one officer and nine other ranks. He made another effort to reach a wounded man, but was driven back by the very close advance of the enemy. His conduct was magnificent throughout, and was a splendid and inspiring example to all who saw him.

He died in June 1958 in Oldham and is buried in Boarshaw Cemetery with distinction and his grave is engraved with the following: For Valour'...'These Are Deeds That Should Not Pass Away, And Names That Must Not Wither'.

I agree wholeheartedly with the inscription and so wanted to provide the history to his brave act so he is not forgotten

The cache is placed with consent of Stephen Keating who works at the arena.
