Recently, I was out and about getting some exercise and came upon this monument to a former couple of our area. I returned a few hours later with my dog for a game of ball in this open field. After snapping some photos, I did a bit of research on the couple...
Lucille was born October 17, 1911 in Heber Springs, AR to the late Will and Theodosha (nee Leslie) Smith; she resided in the Joliet area all of her life. She married James A. on December 22, 1934 in Wilmington, IL. James became an appointed District Trustee for the Village of Troy and the newly formed Fire Protection District in 1964. Lucille was a member of the Women's Auxilliary. He preceded her in death July 27, 1982. They spent their entire married lives engaged in farming in the Shorewood area. Lucille continued operating the farm until 2003 even after her husband's death. She spent her last 4 years in a nursing home and asked for any memorials to her be left to the Troy Fire Department (seen across the way to the south). Lucille and James left a legacy of 3 children, 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Quite the story!
