The monastery was founded in 1785 by Schema nun Olimpiada, with her confessor, Father Iosif. In this work, mother Olimpiada was guided by Father Paisius Velichkovsky, hegumen of Neamț Monastery. The monastery was set under the guidance of Agapia Monastery, which was close by, and afterwards the Monastery became an independent monastery in 1839.
Massive stone walls enclose the main church, "The Dormition of the Virgin Mary," the abbot's building and the administrative buildings (in the northern side of the enclosure) and the monastery's Museum, where the "Queen Mary" workshop used to be (in the building on the south side). The monastic precinct is surrounded by the monastery village, made up of rural traditional houses, where the nuns live, and which lie along narrow alleys.
The assembly of Văratec Monastery was included on the historical monuments list from Neamț county in 2004, and it consists on 5 objectives :
- The Main Church, "The Dormition of the Virgin Mary" - dating from the beginning of the 19th century
- The Gate Bell Tower - dating from the 19th century
- The "Saint John the Baptist" church - dating from 1844, with improvements around 1880
- The "Transfiguration" church - dating from 1847
- The cells - dating from the 19th and 20th centuries

Mănăstirea a fost ctitorită în anul 1785 de călugărița Schema Olimpiada, împreună cu mărturisitorul ei, părintele Iosif. În această lucrare, maica Olimpiada a fost îndrumată de părintele Paisius Velichkovsky, egumenul Mănăstirii Neamț. Mănăstirea a fost înființată sub îndrumarea Mănăstirii Agapia, care se afla în apropiere, iar ulterior mănăstirea a devenit mănăstire independentă în 1839.
Ziduri masive de piatră înconjoară biserica principală, „Adormirea Fecioarei Maria”, clădirea starețului și clădirile administrative (în partea de nord a incintei) și Muzeul mănăstirii, unde a fost atelierul „Regina Maria” (în clădirea din partea de sud). Incinta monahală este înconjurată de satul mănăstiresc, alcătuit din case tradiționale rurale, unde locuiesc maicile, și care se întind de-a lungul aleilor înguste.
Ansamblul Mănăstirii Văratec a fost inclus pe lista monumentelor istorice din județul Neamț în anul 2004 și are 5 obiective:
- Biserica Principală, „Adormirea Fecioarei Maria” – datând de la începutul secolului al XIX-lea
- Clopotnița Porții - datând din secolul al XIX-lea
- Biserica „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” - datând din 1844, cu îmbunătățiri în jurul anului 1880
- Biserica „Schimbarea la Față” - datând din 1847
- Chiliile - datând din secolele al XIX-lea și al XX-lea
