Geocache Description:

Canada In Space

Canada has a rich history in space exploration.  From 1839 when Sir Edward Sabine established the first magnetic observatory at the University of Toronto to study the northern lights; to producing the landing gear used on the Eagle for the first landing on the moon in 1969; to the development of the Canadarm which was used on the Space Shuttle orbiters to deploy, manoeuvre and capture payloads; and, in looking forward to a Canadian rover landing on the moon within the next five years.

Canada also produced a few actors who portrayed people in space.

William Shatner / Capt. James T. Kirk

William Shatner was born in 1931 in Montreal, Quebec.

Although he never flew in space until 2021, he is best known for being the captain of Star Trek’s Enterprise. Star Trek ran from 1965 until 1994 (Star Trek Generations).

He appeared as guest star in various other TV shows including: Columbo, 3rd Rock from the Sun and Boston Legal. He also tried his hand as a recording artist with an album 'The Transformed Man' in 1968.

It wasn’t until 2021, at the age of 90 that he become the oldest person to fly into space and one of the first 600 to do so.
