Everyone likes Fireworks night, but during the summer fire is NOT a good thing. Yet another embankment fire was here this summer around the time of the great heatwave.
Nearby Holt has recently become famous for it's Supermarket disappearing in a Blazing Inferno during the Coronavirus outbreak. This happened on the AB/0C/2020.
We only found out in August when we popped into Shezza to go to the Big T to buy something for Sunday lunch and a sinkhole had opened up blocking access. So at 15:30 we rushed over to Holt; but on arrival we found a building site!!!
With it now being too late to go over to Fakenham we decided to treat ourselves (I use that term loosely) to dinner on Kelling Heath.
But that fire was not the first to engulf Holt.
On D/E/17FG, Holt was devastated by a fire which destroyed most of the medieval town in three hours. The fire started at Shirehall Plain and quickly spread through the timber houses of the town. The church was also badly damaged with its thatched chancel destroyed, the lead melted from the windows and the flames spreading up the steeple. Contemporary reports stated that the fire spread so swiftly that the butchers did not have time to rescue their meat from their stalls on the market. The damage to the town was estimated to be in the region of £11,000. The town subsequently received many donations from all over the country to aid reconstruction.
