[EN] Architecture of Nowa Huta # 1 - Culture and art I invite you for a walk around the older part of the district, in which I will try to show you the most important, representative and interesting objects related to Culture and Art in Nowa Huta. The way out for designers in 1949-56 was the style of socialist realism. The architecture of the housing estates, the center and the administrative center of the steelworks were implemented on the basis of its assumptions. REMEMBER> Always look around! 5 steps are not enough.

Stage 01 - Teatr Ludowy / Theater Ludowy

[EN] The Krakow Theater with the main building in the Nowa Huta district at 34 Teatralne estate, operating since December 3, 1955. The building of the Theater was designed by Janusz Ingarden and Marta Ingarden and Jan Dąbrowski. The theater was originally intended to be a small stage for the Nowa Huta theater, which, according to the plans, was to be built on the southern side of Plac Centralny and during construction it was known as Teatr Kameralny.
The activity of the Ludowy Theater in Nowa Huta was preceded by the amateur, working-class Nurt Theatre, headed by the writer Jan Kurczab. The theater was established as an amateur group in 1952. In May 1953, "Nurt" received the status of a professional theatre. It operated until February 1954.
Since 1996, the Ludowy Theater has also staged plays on the Stage at the Town Hall in the town hall building on the Main Market Square. The youngest stage of the Ludowy Theater is Stolarnia. Established in 2004, it is located in the back office building on the estate Teatralny 23, where previously there was a theater carpentry workshop.

Stage 02 - Ośrodek Kultury Norwida / Norwid Cultural Center

[EN] The Norwid Cultural Center in Krakow originally functioned as the Factory Culture Center of Huta im. Lenin (ZDK HiL). Until 1990, the name of ZDK changed similarly to the subsequent official names of the metallurgical plant in Nowa Huta. The history of the facility dates back to the early 1950s. The date of the first entry in the inventory book of the Library of the Center is December 2, 1950. In 1957, a part of the building in the housing estate Górali 5, adapted from the hotel rooms of the Young Steelworker's House. Osiedle Górali (until 1958, Osiedle C 2 Południe) architect Bolesław Skrzybalski - the name was taken from the title of the first performance performed in the Ludowy Theater - Wojciech Bogusławski's opera entitled Cracovians and Highlanders.
In 1983, part of the artistic output, together with the staff, was transferred to the newly opened Nowa Huta Cultural Center (NCK).
On May 6, 1994, the Council of the City of Krakow decided to take over the Center from January 1, 1995 and to establish the Cultural Center for them. CK Norwid

Stage 03 - Kino Świt / Cinema Świt

[EN] It was the second cinema, after Kino Stal, to open its operations in Nowa Huta. It was inaugurated with the screening of the propaganda film "Three Stories" shot in Nowa Huta and telling about the adventures of young men from the Service for Poland.
The cinema building, erected in 1951-1953, was designed, like the twin cinema Światowid opened in 1957, by architect Andrzej Uniejewski. The facade of the building is decorated with a portico with twelve columns in a great order, it is covered with three torn pediments from the top, and the whole building is crowned with a balustered balustrade. The interiors of the cinema were designed by interior designer Marian Sigmund, a designer of many representative interiors in Nowa Huta in cooperation with a young designer, Irena Pać-Zaleśna. Despite the socialist realist doctrine, the interior design of the Świt Cinema exudes elegant simplicity.

Stage 04 - Szkoła muzyczna im. M. Karłowicza / Music School

[EN] Music School Mieczysław Karłowicz, the activity of the school dates back to 1953 and the foundation of the Music Society in Krakow at one of the primary schools. In 1958, the bonfire was transformed into the State Music School, for which an architectural design was developed a year later. Marek Jabłoński's project was created in the years 1959-61, and the school was put into use in 1974.
The school consists of two one-story pavilions. From the west there is a concert hall, whose northern façade has a form characteristic of the 1960s. In 1975, a colorful, abstract mosaic designed by Marek and Jerzy Jabłoński was implemented on the west wall of the concert hall. The mosaic is made of ceramic tiles. In 2012, work on the expansion of the school was completed. A postmodernist narrative building was created, which is adjacent to the whole from the side of the escarpment.

Stage 05 - Kino Światowid / Cinema Światowid

[EN] The Światowid cinema, designed by Andrzej Uniejewski, began to be built in 1955 and was completed in 1957.
The first screening took place on July 21, 1957. The cinema is entered in the register of monuments.

It had two projection rooms: a large one with a balcony and a small one. The interiors and furniture were designed individually for the cinema by a team led by interior designer Marian Sigmund.
A wide staircase leads to the upper foyer. A large cinema hall, directed transversely to the axis of the building, was covered with a circular vault on a horseshoe plan supported by columns and pillars.
In the underground part of the building there are cellars and a large shelter.

The form of the cinema building contrasts with the Music School designed by Marek Jabłoński in 1959-61.
