Geocache Description:

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE FROM THIS CACHE: Laminated documents or Boy Scout memorabilia.  Take pictures of what you find; Leave only footprints as you depart.

This cache is not intended to be difficult to locate.  Its purpose is to provide an incentive for some of the thousands of scouts who spent a few weeks of their teen years growing up here to return and contemplate the special experiences of these hallowed grounds.  You should see the cache container from 50 feet away.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE:  From the parking lot near the former ranger's cabin GC6W0NJ, take the blue trail all the way to Hodge Pond, roughly 2.4 miles. It's a gentle mostly uphill path, followed by a drop around a bend toward the pond.  Then go straight up the hill on the mowed grassy path (the original road into camp) for about 500 feet as if you were hiking toward the former rifle and archery ranges.  You will see a small cairn about 12 feet off the right side of the trail marking the former service/fire road to Lenape, Iroquois, and Mohawk.  This road is no longer maintained, but the contour will take you directly to the cache.

Iroquois was the middle of the three campsites set up on the hill above the Beech Mountain Scout Camp parking area, nestled between Lenape and Mohawk.  It consisted of two three-sided leadership shelters with two bunk beds each, 20 or so platforms for two-person canvass tents, a two-seat latrine, and a washing station.  Woodbury Troop 149 made Iroquois their July home for a week each year, though with 75 scouts in the Troop during the 1970s, often tented the overflow scouts next door at Lenape.

Please take the time to log reflections of your time at Beech Mountain Scout Camp, both in the cache log and online.

I placed this geocache with my daughter, some 50 years after my Beech Mountain adventures, and appreciate the assistance of joej1549 in helping with this cache.

Thank you for seeking the Iroquois cache.
