La Rocca di Aci Castello

Il maniero si erge su una rupe di origine vulcanica e ha tutto l’aspetto di una vera e propria fortezza sul Mar Ionio, che, nel corso degli anni, ha mutato di destinazione diventando prigione e poi museo civico.
Già la forma di questo promontorio basaltico ha qualcosa di criptico e sibillino, affondata com’è nel mito omerico - per il suo aspetto di risalita di magma dalle profondità del mare -, e il castello, distrutto dall’emiro arabo Ibrahim fu poi riedificato nello stesso punto dal califfo Al Moez, fu comunque opera della dominazione normanna e per primo ricevette le reliquie di Sant’Agata di ritorno da Costantinopoli.
Passando a sorti alterne tra le mani degli Angioini e degli Aragonesi, alla fine del Cinquecento fu adibito a carcere ed ebbe fama di luogo di morte, ma, per converso, salvò molte vite umane negli anni del secondo conflitto mondiale quando le sue segrete furono adibite a rifugio antiaereo.

The manor stands on a cliff of volcanic origin and has all the appearance of a real fortress on the Ionian Sea, which, over the years, has changed its destination, becoming a prison and then a civic museum.Already the shape of this basaltic promontory has something cryptic and sibylline, sunk as it is in the Homeric myth - due to its appearance of magma rising from the depths of the sea -, and the castle, destroyed by the Arab Emir Ibrahim was then rebuilt in the same point by Caliph Al Moez, it was however the work of the Norman domination and was the first to receive the relics of Sant'Agata returning from Constantinople.Passing to alternating fates between the hands of the Angevins and the Aragonese, at the end of the sixteenth century it was used as a prison and had a reputation as a place of death, but, conversely, it saved many human lives in the years of the Second World War when its dungeons were used to air raid shelter.
