Geocache Description:

Redmond Rain . . . surrounds an island

The channels here are ever-changing. In the heat of summer things can slow and become more shallow. With Redmond Rain, the river can be deep and the current can be fast. This cache will be underwater sometimes. Be careful out there!

Gilligan's Island

Where did that island come from? Would you believe me if I told you an engineer did it? If you examine the south end of the island, you will see a tree trunk poking out of the ground. That upside down tree is the anchor that allows sand and gravel to form this island.

Restoring the River

Redmond has been hard at work restoring the Sammamish River to its glory days. If you travel downstream, the river quickly devolves into a ramrod straight channel lined with blackberry bushes. The water there is hot, the oxygen is low, and the fish hate it. Once the salmon arrive in Redmond, they start to see where the City has reformed the river by adding meander back into the channel, by planting trees along the shoreline, by placing large woody debris to provide resting places for fish and stir up the water to add more oxygen. Fish love it here!

Straight and Hot

It took more than 50 years to change the frequently flooded valley into the mostly dry urban center it is today. With Redmond's booming population, the urban side of things has shown great success. The next generation's challenge is to find a way to bring back the needed river habitat to restore our fish populations while also supporting the necessary growth of our cities.

ALERT!

The Invasive New Zealand Mud Snail is being spread to streams by unsuspecting hikers and geocachers. Don't walk in streams or allow your pets to walk in streams. Learn how to decontaminate your gear.

* Keep pets out of streams and lakes. If your dog wades into the water, carefully dry off or brush him/her on dry land. Focus on paws and bellies.

* Carefully scrub off any debris or mud from waders, boots, or clothing that has come into contact with streams, lakes or mud. Freeze these items overnight — or let them completely dry out for 48 hours. The mudsnails can survive out of the water for weeks.

* Drain any stream or lake water collected in gear or equipment before you leave a site. Rinse off the gear in clean, potable water away from any body of water and let it dry completely for 48 hours before reuse. Do not flush rinse water down the storm drain; it’s connected to our creeks and can reintroduce mudsnails.
