Geocache Description:

This cache is a part of a series to recognize buildings, monuments, structures, and areas in Lincoln that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This multi has two stages and the final. You'll be walking two blocks total past three beautiful homes that are all on the NRHP.

Thomas P. Kennard House: Built in 1869, this is the oldest remaining building in the original plat of Lincoln, NE. Designed by architect John Keys Winchell from Chicago, this Italianate style home belonged to Thomas P. Kennard. Kennard was one of the three men who chose the Lincoln location for the state capital in 1867 and also the first Secratary of State for Nebraska. The Kennard home was registered on the NRHP on April 16, 1969.

William H. Ferguson House: This Renaissance Revival style home was built in 1906-1907 for a local merchant, land owner, and business owner William H. Ferguson. The Ferguson House has been on the NRHP since November 29, 1972.

Aeneas Hurlbut--Charles Yates House: This home is "one of the finest Queen Anne style houses in Nebraska, with a high degree of integrity, reinforced by an exemplary rehabilitation and restoration" as stated in it's 1987 Local Landmark application. Refered to as the "Hurlbut-Yates House" by the City of Lincoln it is of the Queen Anne-Stick/Eastlake style. It was built in 1891 for Aeneas Hurlbut who served in the Civil War from 1861-1865 before settling in Lincoln. This house was added to the NRHP on September 17, 1999.

STAGE 1: N 40 48.410 W 96 41.851

A= The last three of the posted N coordinates minus the last digit of the first year referenced on the Historical Marker.
B= How many masonry homes were designed by John K. Winchell in 1869. Add that to the second to last digit in the posted W coordinates.
C= Add the total number of times the word "Nebraska" appears on the Historical Marker to the last digit of the posted W coordinates.

STAGE 2: N 40 48.4A W 96 41.8BC

X= Look for the year the State of Nebraska purchased the Ferguson House. Take three of the digits in that year and put them in reverse omitting the second digit. So DEFG becomes GFD.
Z= Add the number of words in the last line of the paragraph to the last three of what you solved for W coordinates.

FINAL: N 40 48.X W 96 41.Z
