The humble pigeon is an underappreciated resident of the capital.
Most Wellingtonians will have swatted away the pesky creatures from their lunches downtown, or witnessed a fowl that has been squashed by double-decker bus wheels on Lambton Quay.
The inquisitive birds have now literally been cast into the city’s infrastructure with a pilot urban art scheme that has seen bronze pigeon likenesses roosting all over town.
The campaign, spearheaded by economic development agency WellingtonNZ, aims to highlight the take-flight success of 10 local businesses that have spread their wings in the windy city.
Each was given its own unique bronze pigeon sculpture, cast by Jonathan Campbell, that helps to tell the businesses’ stories as a skills shortage sees talent from all sectors fly to faraway lands.
