箕輪城は１５２６年に、長野業尚（ながの なりひさ）によって築かれた城です。
その後、業政から業盛と続いたが１５６６年、武田信玄の攻撃により長野家は消滅した。
その後、武田家の内藤昌豊が主になる。
しかし、武田家の消滅後は、織田信長の滝川一益の主となった。
その後も、本能寺の変で信長が死ぬと小田原・北条家が支配することになった。
北条家の消滅した後に徳川家康は井伊直政を主を命じた。
しかし、１５９８年に、井伊直政が南方の和田宿に新たな高崎城を築いた。
和田宿が高崎に改名し移転したことで、箕輪城は１６７２年の歴史を終えた。
