What was the main shop in Waikaka when I was a kid, is now an empty shell - fear not, the Royal Hotel next door will sort you out if you are feeling a bit peckish (they do an awesome meal and coffee, worthy of a stop).
Like many towns in rural NZ the struggle to keep businesses alive has meant Waikaka has lost it's store and one of it's garages, but it's sense of community is huge
