Wilhelminapier
Strak in de lucht priemende wolkenkrabbers, stuk voor stuk architectonische hoogstandjes, slagen er niet in de oude pakhuizen in de schaduw te stellen. Ultramoderne architectuur schurkt gezellig tegen de oude pakhuizen. Waar je blik ook heendwaalt, overal zie je die contrasten. Oud en nieuw omarmen elkaar en juist dat is het mooie van de Wilhelminapier.
Tussen 1873 en 1971 vertrokken de landverhuizers met hun koffers en kinderen vanaf de Wilhelminapier, op weg naar een nieuw bestaan in een nieuwe wereld. Ook toen de reizigers naar Amerika het schip verruilden voor het vliegtuig, bleven de schepen komen en gaan. Nu meren er enorme, luxe cruiseschepen aan de kade, die de passende naam Holland Amerikakade kreeg.
Skyscrapers here point high into the skies. They are all major architectural achievements but they fail to put the old warehouses in the shade. Ultramodern architecture rubs shoulders happily with the old warehouses. You can see the contrast wherever you look. Old and new embrace each other and that is precisely what makes the Wilhelmina Pier so wonderful.
Between 1873 and 1971, emigrants departed from the Wilhelmina Pier with ther suitcases and their children on their way to a new life in the New World. Even when travellers to America switched to planes, the ships continued to come and go. These days, enormous luxury cruise vessels berth at the quay, which was appropriately names the Holland America Quay.
