Geocache Description:

06 November 2022, 11:00 - 12:00

When: 6th of November 2022

Time 11:00am to 12:00pm

You want to go to Adamsfield.

But you don't want to walk or you don't have a 4WD.

Then this is the cache for you.

This is a rerun of the 2018 event.

I know there are some cachers who would like to be taken into Adamsfield as they cannot get there otherwise.

If you are coming let me know in your log if you need to be transported along the 4WD sections, walking or if you are arriving in a 4WD

This is what I'm planning:

Everyone makes their own way to the listed parking coordinates at the start of the Adamsfield (Morley) track by 10:00am. If you arrive latter and I'm not there you will need to walk into the event.

From here I will ferry everyone who needs transport into Clark's huts. If you have a 4WD I would appreciate your assistance with this if needed. Clarks huts is a 15 minute walks if you feel inclined.

Once everyone has had a look around the huts we will regroup at the event, in the shelter at the camping area.

The camping area is on the other side of the river and up the track a bit at the listed cords.

There is a log crossing over the Adams River opposite the first huts for those who want to walk or who are late arriving.

The D4 rating is for those who walk in and cross the river by the log crossing expect to get your feet wet as you walk along the tracks.

Food and drinks will be provided for everyone at the event.

A BBQ, with sausages, hamburgers, salads, hot and cold drinks.

Including morning and afternoon tea

Some may contain nuts, dairy and gluten.

If you have a special dietary needs let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Post event activity for those interested:

After the event everyone who needs a lift will be transported up to Adamsfield where you can have a look around the old town. Not much there.

Once I have everyone at Adamsfield I'll start taking people up to the old Mine workings where you can have a look around.

As needed everyone will be taken back to the start of the track.

If the weather is bad I'll take carloads up for a drive and a quick look around.

REMBER this is the South West of Tasmania and the weather can turn very bad quickly so be prepared for the worst.

Driving directions:

After leaving Maydena continue to follow the Gordon River Road for 30 kilometres to WP1. At WP1 continue following Gordon River Road for another 3.9 kilometres to WP2. At WP2 turn right onto Clear Hill Road and follow it for 17.7 kilometres to WP3 the Parking area. Warning Clear Hill Road is just after a left hand bend and comes up quick.

Allow 1 hour from Maydena. Beware Clear Hill Road is a windy narrow gravel road so drive carefully.

If you want to take your 4WD into Adamsfield:

Please remember I am organising this event for those who don't have a 4WD and can't get to visit the area, it would be appreciated if you could help transport those people when needed. Thanks in advance.

I have booked access to the Adamsfield Conservation Area for the maximum of 12 vehicles so you will need to contact me and fill in paperwork beforehand if you want to take your car into Adamsfield.  All vehicles must be free of mud before entering Adamsfield Conservation Area to prevent the spread of weeds and fungal diseases, such as phythophora. Vehicles including motorbikes and four wheel bikes must be registered and stay on formed tracks.

The entire track has a hard base so it is very unlikely you will get bogged. The track has some sections with ruts, most is bumpy, bouncing in and out of shallow holes. The track is narrow, some section have thick scrub very close on both sides so expect to get a scratches or two in the paint work and you mirrors knocked. There is one river crossing and two puddles that will have at least 500 mm of water in then. There is one short steep section that has a rock step in it. No real 4WD experience is needed just common scene and thoughtful wheel placement. As long as your 4WD has reasonable ground clearance no other equipment is needed.

Adamsfield today:

Today there is little left of this once booming town. Most of the buildings have been burnt by bushfires or reclaimed by the bush. Despite this, a visit to Adamsfield is well worthwhile. What remains gives a feeling for what once existed here and the surrounding landscape emphasises the remoteness of the settlement. In spring, daffodils and other flowers indicate where gardens once surrounded homes.

The most obvious features at the site such as Clark's huts and the associated relics, the open cut and mullock heaps, are actually from the later, 1930s - 1960s period of mining.

Visitors to Adamsfield do not require a Parks pass.
