Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates are for a seat in the churchyard. This multi requires seeking values there, followed by a short walk to the cache location.

St Mary’s church is partly 12th Century, but more dominantly a 14th Century architecture building, with numerous alterations down through the ages. Recent changes have included a kitchen and an area for community outreach.

The earliest part of the church is the 12th-century Norman north doorway. The Early English Gothic west tower was built slightly later. The south aisle was added in the 14th century and the chancel was rebuilt in the 15th century with Perpendicular Gothic traceried windows.

The south porch leads to an aisle that is lit by four two-light windows. Between the aisle and the nave is a four-bay arcade. The nave has three clerestory windows similar to those in the north wall of the church. The nave pews are 17th-century. The pulpit and reading desk are late 17th-century, added in the reign of James II. The pulpit was refurbished in 1819. The church is a Grade II Listed Building. To the left and right of the belfry panels on the east side of the tower show a lion and a griffin that were made in 1587, but restored in 1892.

There is a fine ring of 8 bells, which are rung at weddings and on other occasions on request.

The parish of Ambrosden is part of the Ray Valley Benefice and St Mary's also serves as the British Army garrison chapel.

Geocaching Etiquette. geocaching.com states under 'Help Center' in Paragraph 1.7: 'We like to keep things fun for everyone, so we have a few rules we encourage everyone to follow. Sign both the logbook and log your find online to get your smiley. Geocache owners love reading about your experience'. There are more rules, but this is the first one. This cache owner requests that if on the rare occasion geocachers are unable to sign, an explanation is given in their log. A photo of the cache, should then be sent through the messaging system. If this is not done, logs will be deleted. Alternatively a 'Write Note' should be made.

WELL DONE to Go catch for being the first to find!
