Porta Santa Croce è una delle porte delle mura di Reggio nell'Emilia, che corrispondono come perimetro agli attuali viali di circonvallazione. È l'unica tra le porte e le posterle di Reggio nell'Emilia ad essersi salvata dalle demolizioni che interessarono le mura alla fine dell'800.
Porta Santa Croce sorge all'estremità nord del centro storico di Reggio nell'Emilia, al termine di via Roma, sull'antica via che portava a Reggiolo, avamposto costruito dai reggiani verso il confine con il comune di Mantova. La porta venne costruita nel 1199 su ordine del podestà di Reggio, il bolognese Guidone Lambertino, ed intitolata alla Croce. Venne interrata con la costruzione del bastione di Santa Croce nel 1551 e riscoperta solo nel 1858, con l'abbattimento del bastione dovuto alla costruzione della ferrovia Milano-Bologna. Il restauro che ne seguì, operato dall'architetto Giulio Bergonzi e ultimato l'anno seguente, non fu dei più felici tanto che della costruzione originale vennero conservate solo le due arcate esterne.
Oggi si presenta come una grossa costruzione in cotto, con due archi a tutto sesto al centro. I due archi sono sormontati dallo stemma del Regno d'Italia e dalla scritta RESTAURATA ANNO MDCCCLIX. Dopo un generale abbandono della porta e del quartiere retrostante, sul finire degli anni novanta del '900 entrambi vennero riqualificati con restauri e con varie iniziative, come ad esempio Viaromaviva, che hanno salvato la zona e la porta da un triste e squallido degrado.
Porta Santa Croce is one of the gates of the walls of Reggio nell'Emilia, which correspond as perimeter to the current ring road avenues. It is the only one between the doors and the rear of Reggio nell'Emilia to have been saved from the demolitions that affected the walls at the end of the 19th century.
Porta Santa Croce stands at the north end of the historic center of Reggio nell'Emilia, at the end of via Roma, on the ancient road that led to Reggiolo, an outpost built by the people of Reggio towards the border with the municipality of Mantua. The gate was built in 1199 by order of the mayor of Reggio, the Bolognese Guidone Lambertino, and dedicated to the Cross. It was buried with the construction of the bastion of Santa Croce in 1551 and rediscovered only in 1858, with the demolition of the bastion due to the construction of the Milan-Bologna railway. The restoration that followed, carried out by the architect Giulio Bergonzi and completed the following year, was not the happiest, so much so that only the two external arches of the original building were preserved.
Today it looks like a large brick building, with two round arches in the center. The two arches are surmounted by the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Italy and the inscription RESTAURATA ANNO MDCCCLIX. After a general abandonment of the door and the neighborhood behind it, at the end of the 1990s both were redeveloped with restorations and various initiatives, such as Viaromaviva, which saved the area and the door from a sad and squalid decay.
