Shaker Heights, at one time, was home to a Shaker colony. There are several locations for Shaker history in this area. The North Union Shaker community was founded by Ralph Russell in 1822. The community was broken into several family groups and this cache is placed near the location of the home for the East Family.
At the peak, the North Union Shaker Colony had about 300 members. The colony was abandoned in 1889.
At present, there is only one Shaker Colony left in the world at Sabbathday Lake in Maine.
