Also For this NoVAGO U course you don’t actually have to borrow, buy, or learn how to play a guitar to solve the puzzle.

About Your Instructor:

I bought my first guitar in 1995. Until recently I was always a below average player who had a limited range and hand movement. Sure, I could belt out a simple few three chord ballads like Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” or Pink Floyd's “Mother” while sitting at your campfire, but I couldn’t bar chords or move up and down the fretboard.

It was during the 2020 COVID lockdown when I pulled out my guitar from storage and decided to get serious. I practiced, I pushed myself, and even took virtual lessons for a while. Since then my playing and range has grown a great deal, as well as the amount of guitars I own. I am not a rock star by any means, but I do have a much deeper catalog of music that I can pull out at your backyard cookout now. There is rarely a day that has gone by since then that I do not pick up one of my guitars and play something. It as gotten to a point where I actually love playing guitar more than going out geocaching.

Basic Guitar Lesson:

A guitar can be tuned a number of ways depending on the style of music being played, but for beginners, we’ll focus on basic standard tuning. Throughout history guitars have been typically tuned in a series of ascending perfect fourths and a single major third. Standard tuning was created hundreds of years ago by players to ease the transition between fingering simple chords and playing common scales, while minimizing fret-hand movement.

Once a player has their guitar tuned, one of the best ways to kickstart any player into high gear is to learn all of the notes on the fretboard, also known as the fingerboard.

The guitar fretboard or “fingerboard” is the part of the guitar where all of the metal frets are placed. The fretboard is used by holding down the strings against each fret and then either picking or strumming some, or all of the strings. The vibrating motion of the string against the metal frets create the sounds of different musical notes. Knowing what notes you are playing is a large part of having a greater understanding of overall music theory.

Homework:

Your homework is to learn the standard tuning of a guitar and to familiarize yourself with the notes on a fret board. Once you get a check on this assignment, your final exam awaits at the solved coordinates.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
