André de Resende, frade dominicano natural de Évora, foi um distinto humanista de reputação internacional. Como homem de cultura clássica, defendeu junto do rei D. João III a "refundação" do aqueduto como um sinal de urbanidade, digno do passado romano da cidade.
A sua memória ficou perpetuada na fonte que mandou erigir (c. 1535) junto do aqueduto e da sua casa de campo, conhecida vulgarmente como quinta do Arcediago.
Esta fonte, construida para repouso e deleite poético, conserva vestígios de duas inscrições latinas, ambas da autoria de André de Resende. A exterior, sobre o arco (originalmente sobrepujada por uma cruz):
"FLECTE GENU. EN SIGNU(M) PER QUOD VIS VICTA TIRANI ANTIQUI ATQUE EREBI CONCIDIT IMPERIUM; HOC TU SIUE, PIUS FRONTE(M) SIVE PECTORA SIGNES NEC LEMORU(M) INSIDIES EXPECTARAQUE VANA TIME."
"Ajoelha-te. Estás do símbolo (cruz) pelo qual foi vencida a força Do tirano antigo (Diabo) e caiu o império de Érebo (trevas); Com ele benze a face e o peito com devoção e não temas as Insidias dos lémures (fantasmas) nem dos falsos espectros."
A do interior, sobre a fonte de mergulho, consagrada às ninfas aquáticas (Náiades):
"EXERE, NAI, CAPUT TENEBROSA E RUPE LAETUMQUE VISE TIBI SACRUM POMIFERUMQUE NEMUS, PER QUOD UBI LAETO DISCURRIS LIBERA FLUXU ARBORIBUS VENIAT COPIA LAETA TUIS."

André de Resende, a Dominican cleric born in Évora, was a distinguished humanist of international reputation. As a man of classical culture, he defended with King João III the "refoundation" of the aqueduct as a sign of urbanity, worthy of the city's Roman past.
His memory was perpetuated in the fountain he had erected (c. 1535) next to the aqueduct and his country house, commonly known as Quinta do Arcediago.
This fountain, built for rest and poetic delight, retains traces of two Latin inscriptions, both by André de Resende. The exterior, over the arch (originally surmounted by a cross):

"Kneel down. You are from the symbol (cross) by which the strength of the ancient tyrant (Devil) was defeated and the empire of Erebus (darkness) fell; With it bless your face and chest with devotion and fear not the Insidiousness of the lemurs (ghosts) nor of false specters."
The one in the interior, over the diving fountain, dedicated to water nymphs (Naiades):
