Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches that get you to visit and see the community artwork that has been applied to some roadside network infrastructure cabinets.

Note that no physical caches are placed on or near the cabinets - you only need to look at them to gather the information you need.

A Bit of History of this Cache

It's slightly ironic that this multi-cache has appeared so late in the AoC series because WP1, and the published coords is the location that effectively started this series in the first place. The cache, called (spoiler alert!) "Fantail" was a traditional physically attached to the cabinet as was a not uncommon trend of the time. Then, reasonably enough, the caching guidelines were modified to prohibit attaching caches to infrastructure like this; specifically telecommunication and power infrastructure. So the cache was duly archived. Wondering how to use the artwork as locations of interest for geocaching the idea of virtual waypoints of a multi-cache was conceived with this multi being first in the queue but never quite coming to fruition.

The intention of the series from that point was to locate the final cache as close to a cabinet as practical, to make the cache at least regular in size and to theme the contents based on the artwork. The first AoC cache (Grenada North) did just that (up until it got muggled) but that ideal turned out to be harder than it sounds for further caches. So the caches got smaller, less themed and more random in location.

While making a multi out the cabinets in this one has been on the radar since the inception of the series, finding a good final location has been holding it up ever since. Whitby East was named from the outset in anticipation of its western counterpart eventually making an appearance.

WP2 over in Seaview Road has its own bit of history. It was originally planned to be part of this multi even though it is just outside of Whitby but eventually it got assigned to Paremata because it was actually in that suburb with its sole other waypoint. But with the eventual deterioration of the graffiti guard film it got painted over and the artwork was gone. So the Paremata multi was left with just one cabinet (eventually stealing one from Papakowhai to make up the numbers). But now there is a brand new artwork just in time to get re-used for Plan A.

So that's why the nominal suburb grouping keeps ending up with cabinets outside of their nominal boundaries and why cabinets obviously belonging to a particular suburb are "unused" or attached to the multi for another suburb.

Layout of the multi-cache

Like other multi-caches in this series the virtual waypoints are the locations of communication cabinets with communitty artwork on them. The final cache is in a somewhat random location and not particularly close to any of the waypoints and so there is no recommended order for this multi.

The virtual way points

The waypoints can be visited in any order. Normally I try to make each digit directly extractable from one of the waypoints but in this case some trivial corrections are required for some digits. Also I try to balance the data to be collected at each waypoint but with so little going on in the WP1 artwork and WP3 being quite "busy" there is a bit of a bias here.

WP1 WP1 F Total number of hinges on the two front doors.
C The cabinet code is WTN-? where ? is a letter. Position of that letter in the alphabet MINUS 3 (e.g. F would be 3).

WP2 WP2 A Number of vowels in the artist's name.
E Number of letters in the artist's name.

WP3 WP3 B

Number of letters in the artist's second name (under the year)

D Number of birds on the front that are not kiwi.

The checksum for A+B+C+D+E+F=42

The final location

S41 06.ABC E174 52.DEF
