Somerville never fails to deliver quirky on every corner. While walking the geopup we discovered a lovely outdoor sculpture here and thought we would share this spot. We did not provide a photo of it so as not to ruin the experience upon your arrival, but we'd love to see pictures in your log.
The Sculpture
The Somerville Arts Council reached out to Fermin Castro (the artist) to give a second life to the trunk of a deceased red elm tree which had been cut at the Marshall Street playground. This was a unique art project as it would give new life to the tree which had been there.
He usually sculpts smaller pieces of wood (no larger than 2-3 feet long) and had never attempted to sculpt a tree trunk over 8 feet high where a large volume of wood had to be removed. He undertook the endeavor in the middle of a hot 2020 summer and a raging pandemic; precautions needed to be made to maintain distance from curious passersby, as well as to take necessary safety precautions while sculpting in a public area. Many of the neighbors who were out for daily walks, errands, exercise, and to entertain their children stopped by with words of surprise, encouragement, and delight.
The end result is a wonderfully unique piece of art we hope you enjoy.

Notes
- Be sure to bring your own pen.
- You may want to bring tweezers too (just in case the log is snug).
- This cache is wheelchair accessible.
- There is no need to climb or enter the playground to find/retrieve the cache.
- This cache is on public property. As such, there's no need to search on/near the private property of nearby homes.
