Geocache Description:

This is a Letterbox Hybrid geocache. It is not at the published co-ordinates - you will need to visit these coordinates to work out the final location.

These Letterbox caches simply highlight significant individuals, from a variety of fields, who once lived behind a letterbox at this location.  My thanks to tundra70 for allowing me to add to this interesting new series.

Harriet Martineau (1802 –1876)

Harriet Martineau was an essayist, novelist, journalist, and economic and historical writer who was prominent among English intellectuals of her time. She gained a large public following with a series popularising classical economics.

Not a local by birth, she arrived in Tynemouth in 1840, in ill health, and fully expecting to die, to be with her brother-in-law who was a doctor. During her five year stay she made a surprising recovery. She published a novel, The Hour and The Man, a book of children`s stories, The Playfellow and a collection of meditative essays, Life in The Sick Room. She eventually moved to Ambleside in the Lakes. There is no blue plaque attached to number 57 Front Street, a restored Georgian town house built in about 1760, although there is a small black one.

To calculate the final co-ordinates:

You will need to gather information from three signs, the plaque detailing Harriet Martineau's stay, a street sign at the start of the alleyway which acts as an entrance to the guest house, and the guest house entrance sign down the "alleyway".

The cache can be found at N55 01.ABC W001 25.DEF where:

Guest House Sign:

A = number of letters in second word minus number of letters in third word

C = number of words on the guest house entrance sign.

Street Sign:

D = number of words that make up the name of the street.

Martineau Plaque:

B = number of letters in the word (which starts and ends with the same letter) directly above the second year

E = Second year minus first year.

F = number of letters in first word on the plaque.

Checksum for A-F = 24

The cache is small, but does contain a stamp. Please leave this in the cache.
