Geocache Description:

The purpose of this simple park and grab is to remember and promote International Geocaching Day.  IGD happens on a particular Saturday every year in August.  Each year on that day, I try to spend a good portion of my day doing some sort of geocaching activity- be it attending events or finding caches or both.  Then, at the end of the day, I hide a cache.  The purpose of hiding a cache is twofold.  First, it gives me a written record of what I did on that day that year.  Second, it hopes to encourage other cachers to make IGD something to remember.  The following account is how I spent my International Geocaching Day in 2022.

For an event to attend, I chose a paddle event at Kincaid Lake State Park near Falmouth, Kentucky.  With a long drive ahead and losing an hour due to time zones, I left my house at 3:30 am.  I made good time, and as I neared the park I was able to stop for a quick P&G to score my first smiley of the day.

The event was held by the boat dock at the lake.  Ground Fox was the host and and it was a really fun time.  There were eats, prizes, giveaways, and lots of geocachers to talk to.  Paddling was not required for the event, but many of us did stick around to get on the water and find the new caches.  There were 30 new caches that formed the hook, line, and sinker geoart, as well as two new reverse Wherigos.  I had never done a reverse Wherigo, so I was pleased to learn about them.  Everything about the event was great.  It didn't bother me a bit to have driven that far.

I didn't really have plans for afterwards, but I knew it was going to involve geocaching.  I decided to head back towards home, stopping often for geocaches.  I picked up a few in Butler, then Walton, and then Richwood.  After that I headed to Carrollton, where I intended to spend awhile...there were quite a few traditionals, an adventure lab, and a multicache at that exit.  After I found a few traditionals it began to rain, so I went over to the state park hoping I could work on the labs without getting too wet.  I did manage to complete four of the stages, but one of them stumped me.  However, by then it was pouring rain and didn't look like it was going to stop anytime soon, so I went back to the interstate to head west.  A couple of exits further down I stopped for one more traditional, and that proved to be my last find of the day as I then focused on closing the gap between me and home.

About the time I reached Louisville, I finally had clear skies overhead.  It was then that I began to think about my annual IGD hide.  Once I got within maintenance range of home, I pulled over to see about placing a cache.  This spot was on my radar for a future hide, so I figured today was as good as any to claim the real estate with my container.

Counting the event, I ended up with 51 finds and one hide on this International Geocaching Day.  I also filled two squares on the matrix, picked up a few new Kentucky counties, and got to hang out with some awesome folks at the lake.  I'd call that a great day of geocaching.
