Hardcore Clean-Up: Attacking the Aquaculture Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

Captain Terror: Thank you all who helped out and/or hauled out any part of this unholy pile of plastic. It really was a CITO like no other!

Continuation of cleaning this site will continue through Ocean Crusaders, so keep an eye on their Facebook if you wish.

See you at the next clean-up :)

Geocache Description:

18 September 2022, 08:00 - 11:00

In April 2017 the Albert River flooded, and inundated a lot land all around GZ. In 2009, a large aquaculture farm had been left in the adjacent field, and with the 2017 flood, it was scattered around the farmland and deep into the mangroves. Some likely made it out into the river and beyond too. Since then, the private land has been cleaned, but mountains of the aquaculture equipment remains in the mangrove system; from large bins all the way down to the filter media.

Above is the aquaculture farm in Jan 2016, nicely stacked in the field, not far from the river and well within reach of the flood.

Imagery from Oct 2017, and shows the floods effect in scattering the equipment around the farmland and into the mangroves.

The private land has been cleaned, but as of current, the waterway has not. This imagery taken in Nov 2021 shows some of the scale of the mess.

Not-for-profit, Ocean Crusaders are a charity that specialises in waterway cleaning around South-East Queensland. Already this year they have removed over 100 tonne from the Brisbane River using mostly volunteer labour. We are teaming up with them and their experience + equipment to get as much of the abandoned aquaculture farm out of the mangroves and accessible for pick-up and recycling.

You'll be having a direct and positive impact on the local, regional and global environment at this event. For a closer look at what we'll be dealing with, check out this video on the Ocean Crusaders Facebook page from earlier this year.

What's the Plan?
This is a CITO Event, but will not be an easy effort to get involved here. All attendees will require a decent level of fitness.

We'll have a staging area set up at GZ where we'll receive further instruction on exactly what needs doing. We will be under the guidance of Ocean Crusaders here. A lot of manpower will be required, both to move the larger pieces, and to collect the thousands of smaller items from the mangroves by hand.

Meet at GZ at 08:00 where you'll be briefed and understand how to be involved. Remember that this event will require heavy lifting and moving of rubbish in difficult terrain - expect boggy grassed areas, mangroves and plenty of walking. There may also be machinery operating in the vicinity of the clean-up zone. We expect to be done by 11:00, but feel free to leave when you're ready.

What to Bring?
Please wear appropriate clothing (I would recommend long pants and sturdy shoes that can get grubby/wet). BYO sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, and water. There are no facilities at this event.

We want this to be a fun, social and engaging event while still being COVID-Safe.
I kindly ask that you agree to stay at home if you are at all unwell, or have been in the last 7 days.
