Seating about 20,000 the Bison had the home field crowd advantage with about 3 times as many fans as the more local Sam Houston State team. The game started by exchanging field goals, then the Bearkats of Sam Houston took their only lead and scored their final points of the game with another. The Bison changed the momentum of the game with a successful fake punt on a drive that ended in a their first TD. The defense were the story of the rest of the game that included an interception return to the 1/2 yard line. This was followed by a final "Dagger" sealing the 2011 Div. 1 National Championship.
