Cache Location
Veterans Memorial Park serves as the gateway into Downtown Hattiesburg. This park serves as a memorial to local citizens who served or lost their lives in military service. With its fountain and green space, it is a popular gathering place for downtown events. In March 2021, the Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art unveiled the Courage mural on the wall of the historic Farrior Building that faces Veterans Memorial Park. Veterans Memorial Park is a sacred space that remembers the courage of all who have served in defense of our nation, particularly the 173 individuals from Hattiesburg who made the ultimate sacrifice. Courage is a fitting artistic addition to the park, as it honors the people and institutions that gave the Hattiesburg community its strength and character.
Featured prominently in the mural is Ensign Jesse L. Brown, a Hattiesburg native who was the first African-American aviator to complete the U.S. Navy's basic flight training program, a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the first African-American naval officer killed in the Korean War. Devotion is a 2022 American biographical war film based on the 2015 book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos, which retells the comradeship between naval officers Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner during the Korean War.
