Geocache Description:

This is a straigtforward two stage multi. At the posted coordinates you will find a plaque detailing the contributions of Edmund John Zavitz to Ontario and his connection to the University of Guelph. You will need to collect some information from this plaque and use it to project a waypoint to the final. Parking coordinates are included for your convienience. At the time of publication, parking was free for Arboretum visitors but please take note of any signage regarding designated spots.

Between the late 1700's and the early 1900's many of Ontario's trees were cut down by loggers or to make way for farmland. This deforestation bothered a young Edmund Zavitz and he went on to study forestry at the University of Michigan. The photo below shows Zavitz posing in a treeless area of Ontario.

Zavitz became a lecturer at the Ontario Agriculture College in Guelph in the new Department of Forestry. As part of his research, he planted a stand of white pines to see they would help mitigate topsoil erosion. These trees still stand today in the Arboretum and are now called the Zavitz Pines or Century Pines. The photo belows the original planting of the pines. Zavitz went on to become the first provincial forester, then the Chief of Reforestation. He is often referred to as the 'father of reforestation' in Ontario.

At the posted coordinates you will find the Edmund John Zavitz plaque.

From the plaque, determine how many years Zavitz was the divisional chief of reforesetation and call this number A.

From the plaque, determine how old Zavitz was when he died and call this number M.

To locate the final, project a waypoint at angle A and distance M metres from the posted coordinates.

Note: The checksum of A is10, and the checksum of M is 12.
