A NEW 'POWERHOUSE':
In times past it was Burwell Lode that gave the village, and North Street in particular, it’s economic base.
Nowadays Burwell has a new economically significant role in the UK's renewable power industry.
Burwell Solar Farm, an 80-hectare site has a generating capacity of 49.8 MW, enough to meet the electricity requirements of up to 9500 households and saving approximately 21641 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
Burwell is also a significant hub for energy storage. A 56.2 MWh lithium-ion battery-storage system (one of the largest of its kind in the UK when it came online) stores excess energy generated from renewables (like wind and solar) when demand is low and releases it when needed, enhancing grid stability and resilience.
The Burwell substation and the high capacity of the overhead cables that you can see enable renewable energy to be distributed to and from the national grid and make the whole area highly-attractive for proposed future projects.
These projects have been the focus of considerable local opposition.
