Geocache Description:

The 25th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

The Milner School district had a log school by 1909.  The new school was built in 1915 and was a large two-room frame building with a coat porch, bell tower, two outhouses and a barn for the children’s horses.   The district wanted a new building by 1923, but lacked the funds to build. The Milner school district went by several different numbers through the years.  By 1953, Milner District 43 only had 20 students and the Hayden District voted to accept tuition students from Milner for one year.  It became more feasible to bus students to Hayden and the school never reopened.   The building became the Community Club in Milner through the 1960s.   Sometime after 1968 the bell tower was donated to the Hayden Heritage Center Museum.  The building was converted to apartments at one time but is now a single residence, painted red, sitting just “behind” the storage units in Milner.
