Geocache Description:

The 26th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

This cache marks the McGregor School which was on the hill South of the Yampa River on the hillside.   Two buildings from the McGregor coal camp can still be seen on the hillside, one of which was the camp superintendent’s home.   McGregor was the home of miners for the McNeil Coal Company which operated from 1915 to the mid 1940s.   The original camp was at the foot of the hill near the river, but when this camp proved to be unsatisfactory the new camp was established on the hillside.    Once the camp was established on the hillside, school was held in the amusement hall beginning in about 1921.  The frame building was divided in half by a long hall down the middle.  It had hardwood floors and heat came through floor registers from a coal furnace in the basement.  Both coal and electricity were supplied by the camp.  The school remained open until 1942.
