Geocache Description:

The 30th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

The Lower Wolf Creek school was a white frame building built in 1926 and took the place of the Upper Wolf Creek school.   It had a covered entry and a living area built for the teacher on one end.  The school closed in 1936 and the building ownership reverted to the homesteader who had initially donated the land.  The building was eventually moved to Craig to be used for a residence.

The Champion Mine was one of several small coal mines operating in the late 1930s and early 1940s.   It usually had 6-8 employees.  If you look across Wolf Creek from the cache location, you can see coal spoils from the mine. -- THE MINE IS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY - DO NOT TRESPASS FOR ANY REASON!!!
