Geocache Description:

THE ROADS TO THIS AREA ARE CLOSED IN THE WINTER ALTHOUGH THE CACHE MIGHT BE ACCESSIBLE IF YOU KNEW WHERE TO LOOK AND THE SNOW ISN’T TOO DEEP! -- Be sure and download this geocache info as cell reception is definitely spotty in this area!

The 32nd of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

The Chimney Creek School was part of the Mystic School District.  The school was first established in 1910 but the school building was not built until 1912.   It was a log building that sat near this spot.   Chimney Creek runs along the back side of the corrals here and crosses CR 46 about 1/10th of a mile to the east.

Although the lower part of CR 46 is now known as Mystic, it is important to note that Mystic was actually on the “other side” of the ridge Northeast of here.   The “Mystic Star Mail Route” from Steamboat traveled along what is now CR 46 and went to the Mystic Post Office at the Fred May ranch, which was located near CR 52E.  It crossed the ridge between Chimney Creek and Salt Creek.
