Geocache Description:

The 38th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

The Slate Creek school was built in 1910 or 1911 and was part of the Steamboat Springs district (#4).  On February 2, 1916, the school burned to the ground.   The community decided to wait until warmer weather to rebuild, so they erected a large tent to serve as the school.  Just days later, on Saturday night February 5th, the large tent was also destroyed by fire.   A second tent was erected and also burned.   It was later determined that a 15-year old student, Elmer Price, was starting the fires because he didn’t like the teacher.  The building was eventually replaced.  Sometime after 1925, the school closed and the building was moved to the high school on Seventh Street in Steamboat to serve as a wood shop.  The building is now part of a residence on Missouri Ave. in Steamboat.
