COMPLIMENTI! Sei arrivato a destinazione! Dopo aver camminato per 135 km (via dei borghi) o 115 km (via del mare) hai raggiunto De finibus terrae.
Hai camminato tra antichi tratturi, calpestando la stessa terra rossa dei Messapi, hai visto da vicino il genio delle architetture bizantine medievali e gli affreschi ricchi di colore da far male agli occhi, hai toccato con mano ulivi secolari e visto la rinascita piena di speranza dei nuovi uliveti piantati, come Giano hai guardato al passato e al futuro, hai riscoperto le grotte dove i tuoi avi sognavano e guardavano lo stesso mare, tutto sui tuoi piedi. Ora puoi sederti e mangiarti un rustico, te lo sei meritato! :)
Basilica di Santa Maria de finibus terrae
Si tramanda che san Pietro in viaggio per Roma fece tappa a Leuca e da allora il tempio dedicato alla dea Minerva, posto sul promontorio japigeo, diventò un luogo di culto cristiano e uno dei principali centri di pellegrinaggio dell'età antica e medievale.
La devozione dei fedeli verso la Madonna di Leuca ha origine antica: si parla di un grande miracolo che avrebbe salvato i pescatori il 13 aprile del 365 da una burrasca.
L'attuale struttura fortificata della chiesa venne costruita tra il 1720 e il 1755 da monsignor Giovanni Giannelli per resistere ai numerosi e ripetuti attacchi da parte dei predatori turchi e saraceni.
Dal 7 ottobre 1990 il santuario è stato eletto a Basilica minore.

Now you can sit down and eat a rustico, you deserve it! :)

It is said that St. Peter on his way to Rome made a stop in Leuca and since then the temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, located on the Japigeo promontory, became a place of Christian worship and one of the main pilgrimage centers of the ancient and medieval age.
The devotion of the faithful to the Madonna di Leuca has ancient origins: there is talk of a great miracle that would have saved the fishermen on April 13, 365 from a storm.
The current fortified structure of the church was built between 1720 and 1755 by Monsignor Giovanni Giannelli to resist the numerous and repeated attacks by Turkish and Saracen predators.
From 7 October 1990 the sanctuary was elected a minor basilica.
