I was awarded the opportunity of placing an Adventure Lab cache and decided to create it at Blackball
Blackball is a small town on the West Coast of the South Island. The town was named after the Black Ball Shipping Line, which leased land in the area to mine for coal. The gold rush in the Moonlight district in 1864-65 heralded the birth of Blackball. In 1893 a more settled community developed with the coal mine’s opening. Blackball was a centre of New Zealand radicalism and workers' militancy. It is credited as the birthplace of (the predecessors of) the New Zealand Labour Party.
After the roar of the coal trains died down in mid 1960, the dredges had been sold for scrap and the mill and mines were quiet, so was the town but it refuses to die. As an access point to the Croesus Track and the Pike29 Memorial Track which leads from our newest Great Walk the Paparoa Track, Blackball now has a new café, a shuttle and car relocation service and more accommodation options.
To find the necessary information and be able to assemble the final coords you will be taken around the township and visit some places of interest.
The cache is a bison, the hint is: Strainer.
You can start two interesting tracks not far from GZ from clearly sign posted access points.
