Chiesa di Santa Maria di Cantù
Nel 1093 il Benedettino Adalberto da Cluny, che aveva già fondato a Pontida un monastero di monaci della sua riforma, volle istituirne un altro di monache a Cantù, da dedicare alla Beata Vergine.
A capo del Monastero pose come Priora Agnese di Borgogna alla quale, così come alle suore che continuano il suo insegnamento, la tradizione della lavorazione del prezioso merletto canturino.
Il Monastero fu riedificato nel 1690 e, nello stesso anno, fu annesso alla Chiesa di Santa Maria edificata al suo fianco (1665-1680) per cura degli ingegneri Gerolamo e Giovan Battista Quadrio.
L’imponente chiesa, a pianta centrale con otto colonne corinzie raggruppate in coppie, dove ancora riposano le reliquie della prima Priora Agnese, e il vicino Monastero subirono deplorevoli devastazioni durante la Repubblica Cisalpina (nel 1798 la stessa Repubblica soppresse anche l’Ordine delle Benedettine e la fabbrica fu trasformata in caserma); successivamente la chiesa fu comperata all’asta da Giacinto Galimberti e, dopo il ritorno degli Austriaci, fu restaurata e consacrata a cura del Prevosto Carlo Annoni.
Il convento invece divenne proprietà del demanio; acquistato dal Comune di Cantù all’inizio del sec. XX, è stato adibito ad uso uffici pubblici e aule scolastiche che si allineano ai lati del chiostro grande e di quello minore, splendido e intatto (pur bisognoso di urgenti restauri), di Santa Chiara.

Church of Santa Maria of Cantù
In 1093 the Benedictine Adalberto da Cluny, who had already founded a monastery of monks in Pontida during his reform, wanted to establish another one for nuns in Cantù, to be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
At the head of the Monastery she placed Agnes of Burgundy as Prioress to whom, as well as to the nuns who continue her teaching, the tradition of working the precious Canturino lace.
The Monastery was rebuilt in 1690 and, in the same year, it was annexed to the Church of Santa Maria built alongside it (1665-1680) by the engineers Gerolamo and Giovan Battista Quadrio.
The imposing church, with a central plan with eight Corinthian columns grouped in pairs, where the relics of the first Prioress Agnese still rest, and the nearby Monastery suffered deplorable devastation during the Cisalpine Republic (in 1798 the same Republic also suppressed the Order of the Benedictines and the factory was transformed into barracks); then the church was bought at auction by Giacinto Galimberti and, after the return of the Austrians, it was restored and consecrated by the Provost Carlo Annoni.
The convent, on the other hand, became the property of the state; purchased by the Municipality of Cantù at the beginning of the century. XX, was used for public use and classrooms that line up on the sides of the large cloister and the smaller one, splendid and intact (although in need of urgent restoration), of Santa Chiara.
