PIAN DI MELOSA
Frazione appena sopra Tosi verso Vallombrosa nel comune di Reggello, dove inizia la riserva naturale di Vallombrosa.
La storia della foresta è strettamente legata a quella dei Monaci Benedettini Vallombrosan, la cui congregazione fu fondata da San Giovanni Gualberto nel 1036.
In un bosco già composto prevalentemente da latifoglie, i monaci iniziarono dal XIV secolo l'impianto dell'abete bianco (Abies Alba) il cui legno era destinato al taglio con la procedura cosiddetta del "taglio raso" e, successivamente, alla vendita principalmente ai cantieri navali. L'attività forestale divenne il settore principale della loro economia e i terreni di proprietà crebbero nel corso degli anni.
Nei secoli successivi l'attività in ambito forestale si approfondì grazie a figure come l'Abate Luigi Fornaini (XVII Secolo) fino alle interruzioni dovute alle soppressioni delle corporazioni religiose sia napoleoniche che del Regno d'Italia, che costrinsero i monaci a lasciare l'abbazia per tornarvi nel 1949. La sapienza e la cura per la foresta che i monaci hanno esercitato per secoli sono proseguite dall’Unità d’Italia con il Corpo Forestale dello Stato e lo sono ancora oggi grazie ai Carabinieri Forestali.
Nel 1869 l'Abbazia diviene sede del Regio Istituto Forestale, la prima scuola forestale italiana con la direzione di Alfonso de Bèrenger, fino al 1914 quando fu trasferita a Firenze per diventare successivamente la Facoltà di Scienze Forestali.
Nel 1977 la foresta diviene Riserva Naturale e dal 1992 insieme alla vicina Foresta di Sant’Antonio costituisce una Zona Speciale di Conservazione all’interno della rete europea Natura 2000. È inoltre parte dell’Associazione Foresta Modello delle Montagne Fiorentine. Tutele e riconoscimenti che hanno lo scopo di mantenere e incrementare il già elevato livello di biodiversità della foresta.
A conferma del legame della foresta con i monaci, dal 1950 San Giovanni Gualberto è il Santo patrono dei Forestali d’Italia e viene celebrato ogni 12 Luglio con l’accensione della lampada votiva nella cappella a lui dedicata in Abbazia.

Fraction just above Tosi towards Vallombrosa in the municipality of Reggello, where the Vallombrosa nature reserve begins.
The history of the forest is closely linked to that of the Vallombrosan Benedictine Monks, whose congregation was founded by San Giovanni Gualberto in 1036.
In a forest already composed mainly of broad-leaved trees, the monks began planting silver fir (Abies Alba) from the fourteenth century, the wood of which was intended for cutting with the so-called "razor cut" procedure and, subsequently, for sale mainly to shipyards. Forestry became the main sector of their economy and the land they owned grew over the years.
In the following centuries the forestry activity deepened thanks to figures such as Abbot Luigi Fornaini (XVII century) until the interruptions due to the suppression of the religious corporations both Napoleonic and of the Kingdom of Italy, which forced the monks to leave the abbey to return there in 1949. The wisdom and care for the forest that the monks have exercised for centuries have continued from the unification of Italy with the State Forestry Corps and are still today thanks to the Forestry Police.
In 1869 the Abbey became the seat of the Royal Forestry Institute, the first Italian forestry school under the direction of Alfonso de Bèrenger, until 1914 when it was transferred to Florence to later become the Faculty of Forestry Sciences.
In 1977 the forest became a Nature Reserve and since 1992, together with the nearby Forest of Sant'Antonio, it constitutes a Special Conservation Area within the European Natura 2000 network. It is also part of the Model Forest Association of the Florentine Mountains. Safeguards and awards that aim to maintain and increase the already high level of biodiversity of the forest.
Confirming the bond of the forest with the monks, since 1950 San Giovanni Gualberto has been the patron saint of the Forestry of Italy and is celebrated every 12 July with the lighting of the votive lamp in the chapel dedicated to him in the Abbey.
