Charlotte Dundas Trail 1
This is one of 3 caches that make up a mini-series within the larger Kelpies Kerse Geoart Series. Each of the 3 caches are found by collecting information along the Charlotte Dundas Heritage Trail, which celebrates the history of 'The Charlotte Dundas' - the world's first practical steamboat. These caches are not puzzles. The Trail runs along the south side of the Canal then the Carron River. The final cache locations are all located on the north side of the Carron River, so you may need to car or bike to them, unless you just fancy a bit of a walk.
This part of Scotland had a key role in the industrial revolution, not just in Scotland or indeed the UK, but worldwide. Figures like William Symington were drawn to the area because it had the necessary building blocks of large scale industrial projects - easy access to coal, the canal to transport materials, a world class iron industry, burgeoning chemical enterprises, and a skilled workforce. The legacy of that period can still be seen around Falkirk and Grangemouth, in historic buildings and still active industries.
Along the trail are information boards and murals to explain each area and the historical figures connected with them. Collect the information from each location to complete the missing coordinates of the 3 caches.
