This cache is to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of the original Conejo Cachers. Now normally you would save FTF honors for the person being celebrated, but there is zero chance that Kate will have a chance to be FTF. To be perfectly honest, I seriously doubt that she will ever find this cache. Because in her 20 years of caching, Kate has managed to find a staggering 290 caches.
A little about the cache. N 34° 08.118 W 118° 57.149 Here are the coords to where this was going to be placed. I learned after placing this cache that there are no more caches allowed in Boney Mountain wilderness. Bummer. I really wanted to place something there because it ties everything together. But sometimes you just have to row with the oars you're given. So the new location while not in the Boney Mountain wilderness, certainly has a view of it and where we ate lunch on that glorious day back in May of 03. Sorry Kate, that is as close as I could get.
And now a little back story about the honoree.......
The Conejo Cachers were born on May 13th, 2003 on an amazing hike through the Santa Monica Mountains. We hiked 13 miles that day picking up 6 caches and completed the day in the parking lot with celebratory suds and snacks that someone had brought along. It was truly one of the most special days in my life. I didn't know it then, but I was creating lifelong friends. The OG consisted of myself, Slegal (Scott), Baby Sparkle (Jolene), Narlsharls (Oz) CampyC (Carolyn) and Eco chic (Kate). I had met Kate just a month earlier at a Earth Day event put on by the city of Thousand Oaks. I loved her passion about the environment and her enthusiasm about making the world a better place. But her light up the room smile is still my first memory of her. You can learn a lot about somone when you spend an entire day trudging through the mountains with them, and that day I learned that Kate was an amazing human being and definitely my people! She is the kind of person that you want in your life. Fast forward almost 20 years later and Kate is still in my life. Not long after that hike we planned another day of caching that had us doing a lot of coastal caches as well as three greats, The Wind Cave (GC14AE), Hot Seagull Soup (GC714B) and Big Fig (GCGA0N) We found 28 caches in total. We named it the Conejo Cachers Summer Solstice cache extravaganza. The day culminated at Kates groovy little abode in Ventura with Bob Marley, pizza and beer. An end to another epic day. It wasn't too long after that that we learned Kate was moving to Reno. It was a sad day for the Conejo family to lose one of the OG, but a happy day for Kate as she would be furthering her career by eventually becoming the Asst City Manager of Reno, and then moving on to become the city manager of Washoe County.
I'm guessing if you are busy running a city, it leaves you little time to cache. But whenever we get together, we always manage to find time to grab a couple. I would love nothing better than for all of the OG to find this cache and tell your own story about Kate and the wonderful days we had caching. View the pictures to see some of our many adventures, and feel free to send me pictures you have of her so I can add them to the gallery. Happy Birthday, Kate!
