呢喃 — 尋著蛙屬們如狗吠般的作響，由北宜公路上的水溝蓋底下跳耀至... 細微如呢喃般隱隱而不曾間斷的... 雪隧的排氣、進氣通風豎井與隧道機電設備等。豎井由產業道路的地面開挖貫通直至隧道，氣流於中繼站相互調和，並與群落生境及隱藏於隧道防水裳中岩層隙裡的暗流，一同細聲迴響。
Whisper — Following the barking-like sound of frogs, jumping from under the cover of the ditch on the Beiyi Highway to... subtle and uninterrupted like a murmur... the air from the vent of the Hsuehshan Tunnel, the air shafts and tunnel electromechanical equipment, etc. The air shafts of the tunnel are excavated from the ground of the industrial road. The air is adjusted while it flows through the relay station, making "pianissimo echoes" together with the niche(in ecology) and the undercurrent in the crevices of the rock hidden in the waterproof garment of the tunnel.

雪山隧道的配置主要包括兩座主坑、一座導坑。為了通風所需，採用加強縱流式通風系統，沿線設置了三組通風豎井，每組包括進氣井與排氣井，每組豎井底部均設置一座地下通風機房，隧道內的三組通風機房之間則加設通風中繼站，來調和空氣品質，共有三組通風中繼站，每組之新鮮空氣及廢氣中繼站分開相距50公尺。而雪山隧道兩端洞口之高程相差161 公尺，南下線為下坡，車輛廢氣放量較少；北上線上坡，車輛廢氣排放量較多，故運用豎井及中繼站來互相調和主隧道兩線的空氣。
雪山隧道一號豎井，其原設計位於坪林大湖尾村之茶園區，由於當地居民長期強烈抗爭擔心污染茶園，因而將豎井沿導坑線上往東南位移約400公尺，再設長約320公尺之水平排氣隧道連接排氣豎井，將廢氣排到山脊的背後，以消除民慮，並為減輕施工對當地環境之衝擊，除利用既有產業道路以外，另闢800公尺之通達道路到達移位後之豎井位置。
一號豎井位處的地層區，上方為枋腳層，下方為媽岡層(砂頁岩)，進氣豎井約480幾公尺深，排氣豎井隧道則達500多公尺深，是三組通風豎井中深度最大亦為最後進行的開挖作業。
