Cat Ba is the largest island in Ha Long bay (sometimes called Halong bay) and at the same time a national park of the same name. It is covered with jungle, rocky terrain, several fishing and agricultural settlements, as well as a number of beaches unknown to tourists. But it is mainly a national park, founded to protect island ecosystems. In addition to more than half of the island's area, the national park also covers the adjacent islands.
Ha Long means Descending Dragon. The legend about the origin of the island says that once when attacked by an enemy, a dragon came down from the sky and spewed thousands of pearls. The pearls subsequently turned into islands that are supposed to prevent further attacks. The most famous of them is Cat Ba Island.
Cat Ba Island
On the eastern side of the island, there are several completely untouched and unexplored beaches in Lan Ha Bay. Cat Ba Park covers 150,000 hectares, half of Cat Ba Island and more than 1,600 islets in Ha Long Bay. The islets are almost inaccessible and untouched by humans. In 1994, this territory was included in the UNESCO list.
Cat Ba town is not only an administrative, economic and social centre but also a tourism centre of Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city. The town has a total population of 12,000 people, and an area of 335.93 ha, with about 314 hotels, and resorts; 117 households having rooms for rent during the peak season. The number of restaurants serving tourists is 70 restaurants. The number of cruise ships for the day and overnight boat is 156. In 2019, Cat Ba town welcomes more than 2.8 million visitors including both domestic and international visitors.

Cat Ba je největší ostrov v zátoze Ha Long (někdy označované Halong bay) a zároveň stejnojmenný národní park. Je pokrytý džunglí, kamenitým terénem, několika rybářskými a zemědělskými osadami a také řadou zatím pro turisty neznámých pláží. Je zde ale hlavně národní park, založený na ochranu ostrovních ekosystémů. Kromě více jak poloviny rozlohy ostrova zabírá národní park i přilehlé ostrovy.
Ha Long znamená v překladu Sestupující drak. Legenda o vzniku ostrova říká, že jednou při napadení nepřítelem se z nebe snesl drak, který chrlil tisíce perel. Perly se následně proměnily v ostrůvky, jež dalšímu napadení mají zabránit. Nejznámějším z nich je právě ostrov Cat Ba.
Na východní straně ostrova se v zátoce Lan Ha rozkládá několik zcela nedotčených a neprobádaných pláží. Park Cat Ba zabírá 150 000 hektarů, polovinu ostrova Cat Ba a dalších více jak 1600 ostrůvků v zátoce Ha Long Bay. Ostrůvky jsou téměř nepřístupné a lidmi nedotčené. V roce 1994 bylo toto území zapsáno do seznamu UNESCO.
Město Cat Ba je nejen administrativním, ekonomickým a společenským centrem, ale také turistickým centrem čtvrti Cat Hai, města Hai Phong. Město má celkovou populaci 12 000 lidí a rozlohu 335,93 ha, s asi 320 hotely a letovisky; více jak 100 domácností má v hlavní sezóně pokoje k pronájmu. Počet restaurací sloužících turistům je přes 70 . Lze zde využít velký počet výletních lodí na jednodenní i noční plavby. V roce 2019 město Cat Ba přivítalo více než 2,8 milionu návštěvníků, a to jak domácích, tak i zahraničních.
