TIME(Taiwan Image _Modern Essences)這個系列第一階段是27位臺灣近代畫家。
林玉山(1907-2004),嘉義人,父親為民間畫師兼裱畫師傅,1922年,師事畫家伊坂旭江,在其鼓勵下於1926年前往日本,就讀於東京川端畫學校西畫科。1927年第1屆台灣美術展覽會,林玉山與郭雪湖、陳進入選,被稱為「台展三少年」。
1928年再度入圍第2屆台灣美術展覽會,並與嘉義、台南其他畫家共同成立春萌畫會。1930年以《蓮池》參加第4屆台灣美術展覽會,並被選為特優。1934年於台灣日日新報舉辦第一次個展。1935年再度赴日,進入東丘社畫塾,並參加名古屋美展。1940年加入台陽美術協會。後來任教於嘉義中學、靜修女中與台灣師範大學。
林玉山於1969年獲得中國書畫學會金爵獎,1970年獲得教育部文化繪畫獎。1975年前往美國威斯康辛大學講學並舉行個展。1989年,與陳慧坤、陳進於台北國立歷史博物館舉行聯合展覽。1990年獲得第15屆國家文藝特別貢獻獎。
林逝世後的2006年國立歷史博物館舉行林玉山百歲紀念展。2015年5月7日,由國立台灣美術館收藏的林玉山《蓮池》被文化部文化資產局登錄為中華民國國寶,成為台灣近代化畫家首件國寶級作品。成為台灣第一件創作於20世紀、被指定為國寶的畫作,也是繼2009年黃土水的淺浮雕《水牛群像》被指定為國寶之後,第2件被指定為國寶的近現代藝術品。(資料來自維基百科)

Lin Yushan (1907–2004), was a Taiwanese artist.
Lin was raised in a family-owned picture framing store. Lin grew up with an early passion for painting. He also spent much of his early years learning from artists such as Tan Ting-pho and Isaka Kyokko.
Between 1926 and 1929, he lived in Japan and studied Oriental painting at the Kawabata Painting School. In 1927, his works Water Buffalo and Southern Gate were selected for the 1st Taiwan Art Exhibition , where, together with Chen Jin and Guo Xuehu, he became known as one of the “ Up-and-Coming Talents”. After this, he was selected in each subsequent year of the Taiwan Art Exhibition . His works Lotus Pond, Sugar Cane, and Evening Glow were named as special selections for the 4th, 6th, and 7th Taiwan Art Exhibition respectively.
Aside from participating in exhibitions, he also actively participated in various types of painting societies.
In order to advance his art Lin went back to Kyoto to continue advanced studies at Insho Domoto's Art School Tokyusha from 1935 to 1936.
In 1946, he served as a juror for the Chinese Painting Section of the 1st Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition.
In 1972, he and some other painters formed the “Chang Liu Painting Society”. In addition to his creative work, Lin also contributed to the education of new artistic talents. He taught at Provincial Chiayi Senior High School and Blessed Imelda's School. In 1951, he was hired by the Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University, where he stayed until his retirement in 1977.
