On this day 100 years ago Howard Carter, Lord and Lady Carnarvon and their daughter entered the passageway to the door leading into the antechamber of King Tutankhamun tomb. Carter chiselled an opening in the upper left hand corner of the door, inserted the candle and peered in. At first he could see nothing, the hot air escaping from the chamber caused the candle flame to flicker. As his eyes grew accustomed to the light, details of the room emerged slowly from the mist.
