If you have never visited the Honanki Heritage Site, you owe it to yourself! It is one of three Heritage sites within the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest. Before it was swapped with the USFS it was part of the Hancock Ranch, which still owns adjoining lands. It borders on the Wilderness area.
There, Native American ruins there that date back somewhere around 1100 years (depending on who you listen to). However this is just the age of the Sinagua peoples. There have been people in the area for thousands of years.
Sometime in the 90's there was archeological work going on at the site, doing improvements and such. One of the students was answering the call of nature and whist doing so, disocvered a small stone object, a bit larger than a thumbnail, give or take.
This was given to the head Archaeologist and determined to be the base of a point, from the Clovis era! Dating back to between 10 and 12 thousand years old! This particular piece is on display within the Red Rock Visitor Center off of hwy 179 near the Village of Oak Creek.
They were used to hunt Mammoths and other large animals of the time, and were thrown by hand (once lashed to a rod) or propelled using an atlatl, and possibly used as a hand tool at times too.
There are amazing remains of rock houses built into the cliffs here, and they are stunning! The site is open 9:30 to 3 seven days a week. Closing when the road gets flooded out, or over 100 degrees. Pink Jeep Tours operates tours by permit at the location.
It is a long bumpy ride out, but worth it. Entrance is free, but if you are going to actually enter and explore the site then you need a National Parks Pass, or Red Rocks pass, available at the outpost there for 5.00. You will not need to go inside the site to grab the cache. The terrain level is due to the road, not the short walk.
The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates! You will need to solve, a simple little puzzle to discover the correct numbers!
I will leave you with this to ponder as you may :)
