Have you ever encountered a snake while geocaching or hiking? Did you know what it was? Did you panic and run? Were you simply curious? No matter what your reaction was, THIS IS THE PROGRAM FOR YOU.
The majority of humans have an irrational fear of an animal that is approximately 1% of our size - the snake. Is it because they are so different? After all, they have no arms or legs; they have no eyelids and can't blink; some of them use venom to catch their food, and it's actually dangerous to humans, even though they can't eat us. What exactly makes so many people say "the only good snake is a dead snake!"? HOW ABOUT JOINING US TO DISPEL SOME OF YOUR FEAR? Knowledge conquers fear.
As an outdoor activity, geocaching offers more opportunity for us to encounter snakes, so it would behoove us to understand them a little better. Brett Parker, a firefighter/EMT from the Canyon Lake, TX FD and a snake relocation specialist with 30 years experience, will give us some practical insight on the snakes of Texas and how to deal with a snake encounter. You may not be able to identify every snake you come across, but you WILL have a good idea as to whether it is dangerously venomous or not by the time you leave.
